Business Upgrades: Produce Event Videos
A few hours before any affair, you will see several people milling about in the party venue: the caterer and her table set-up and skirters; the (relatively stressed out) party planner; and the film and photography crew scouting for the best camera locations.
Just by looking at the last-minute prep work in any party, you will see which businesses you can base your expansion on. You can either take charge of the catering or you can learn how to produce event videos. Both business models are extremely lucrative, but one’s more stressful than the other. Food preparation can drain you if you don’t have a few dozen dependable employees. Filming an event on the other hand is less stressful, but will require you to learn some tech skills before you can start.
Here are some tips for party planners who want to try their hand at event video production.
1. Tread carefully
You might have some stiff competition nearby and that company will not appreciate a start up butting in and stealing their clients. Here’s what you can do to deal with the competition: join forces. If they’re the only game in town, you can be sure they’re always swamped. Set up a good business relationship and promise a generous commission for every client they send your way when there’s an overflow on their part.
2. Don’t go cheap on training
If you can, take lessons from professionals, or send a relative to film school. Expertise is essential, just in case someone needs to look at your credentials. Besides, you can charge more if people knew you invested a lot to get your business started. If possible, do not simply hire your tech person, be a techie yourself. You can practice with regular digital camcorders just to learn the basics of angles, frames and editing.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with your event videos business. Nowadays, even a twelve year old can produce movies that become globally accepted (via YouTube). If you’re still hesitant about it, you can create a promotional video for your party business that you can upload in video sharing sites just for fun to get the hang of film making.
